My Current Haircare Routine

Over the past few months I’ve been slowly switching up my haircare routine and I think I have finally found the perfect mix! If you’ve come from my YouTube channel (if not check it out here!) you’ll know that I love my hair to be full of volume. As I have naturally straight hair it takes a little more work to make it big and voluminous.

So first off I wash my hair every other day with the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo followed by the TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Conditioner, I find that these two work perfectly together as each one is combating a problem that I want to be fixed! The Keratin Shampoo smooths any frizz and cares for my damaged hair. As for the 24 Hour Body Conditioner, it adds that bit of volume that I want and also gives my hair a little treat. On occasions where I think my hair needs an extra boost I use the L’oreal Elvive Triple Resist Mask afterwards, this sorts out any dryness or split ends that are spiralling out of control and just leaves my hair feeling smooth and healthy.
Once I have finished washing and conditioning my hair I then wrap it up in a towel for about thirty minutes. After that my hair is usually 80% dry so then I use some of the Shockwaves Volume Mousse, this is a slightly sticky mousse when it’s on wet hair however as soon as your hair is dry it vanishes and you’re left with pretty big hair! After I have worked the mousse into my hair I spray in some of the TRESemmé Heat Protect which is by far the best one I have tried as it makes my hair really shiny and soft. Then I just blow dry my hair upside down for even more added volume!
As for styling, I am rather naughty as I use heat on my hair every day because if I did I would be left with straight hair that flicks out in random places, so I use my straighteners which are BaBaylis Pro 230 Radiance, I’ve had these for a good 3 years and they’re still going strong! The most common hair look I do is wavy hair because once again it makes my hair pretty darn big. So once my hair is done I let it cool down then I put a tiny bit of V05 Extreme Rework Fibre Putty to define the layers and the waves in my hair. Then finally as soon as I have my hair exactly how I want it I just spray it with hairspray and the one I use is the Shockwaves Ultra Strong Hold Hairspray which keeps my hair in place all day and it’s inexpensive.
If you would like to see a full review of any of the products that I have mentioned then let me know in the comments.

Simple Summer Hair

So lately I have been doing very basic hair that gives it a lot of volume and still looks put together! In the video below I was on day two hair so I did miss out a few of the steps I mentioned below.. I don’t have the patience nor the time to play around with my hair to make it look perfect and I just did this hairstyle randomly one day and I’ve worn it like it ever since! So in this post I’m going to give you a step by step guide how to achieve an effortless summer hairstyle!

STEP ONE: Wash and condition your hair! (if needed)

It doesn’t matter if you’re on day 1,2,3 day hair you can still achieve this look easily! However if it is my ‘hair wash day’ (which is every two days) then my current routine is the TRESemme 24 Hour Body shampoo and conditioner and as an extra treat for my hair I use the Loreal Paris Elvive Triple Resist deep conditioner. Both conditioners I leave on my hair for 2-3 minutes so they really nourish my hair.
STEP TWO: Add volume and texture!

So after I get out of the shower I wrap my hair up in my towel and leave it for about 15-20 minutes so as moisture is absorbed into the towel then I go ahead and add my volumising mousse which is by Pantene PRO-V as an extra boost I spray in some of the Nick Chavez Plump ‘n’ Thick Thickening Mist which works a charm with the mousse!
STEP THREE: Protect your ends!

The last thing you want to do is damage your hair especially the ends as the more you damage the ends of your hair the more frizz you will be left with. So to keep those frizzy ends at bay I do three things to help. First I spray my hair with V05’s heat protect, this helps protect my hair when I dry it with the hairdryer and add the waves into my hair.
STEP FOUR: Dry your hair!

This is completely optional how you dry your hair but to get the best volume I always dry my hair upside down so it helps the hair lift from the root. You could always let your hair air-dry but it won’t be as full looking.

STEP FIVE: Grab your straighteners and wave! (unless you have proper crimpers)

If you watch the video above then you will see how I wave my hair with straighteners, its very simple I just twist the straighteners from one side to the other whilst slowly going down my hair, the slower you do it the bigger waves you will get.

STEP SIX: Now to get even more volume!

On one side of your head (or both if you want) split the top section of your hair leaving a few strands at the front. With the hair you’ve sectioned back-comb the base a few times then twist the hair around then push it forward and you should end up with a little ‘poof‘ then clip it in place with some bobby pins or with a pretty clip. Now for the sides that we left out, I back-comb these a little too just to fill any gaps and make my hair look fuller! I also wear my fringe to the side and back-comb that too! If you‘re lost then watch the video!

STEP SEVEN: Add the finishing touches!

Then simply add hair spray and any more bobby pins to be sure everything stays in place!

If you’ve recreated this look this tweet it to me! @_velvetfox_

Birchbox April & May 2013

Long time no write? Sorry that I haven’t been blogging recently! With my old laptop completely dying on me and having to wait for my new one meant that there was a week and a bit without a laptop! Anyway, I have recently subscribed to a few beauty boxes and one of them is from Birchbox (get yours here) I have also subscribed to Miss Glossybox however, I haven’t received that yet but when I do I will be blogging about it!

April and May boxes!

As some of you may know I was subscribed to SheSaidBeauty boxes but then they stopped doing them and I never bothered looking for a replacement until I got an email from SheSaidBeauty saying that there was a promotional offer for SheSaidBeauty customers only. So I snapped up the chance! The offer was to get the regular beauty box and a FREE editors pick box as an extra.

So let’s talk about them in order!

Aprils Birchbox

Gerda Spillman Renaissance Age Serum (full-size £69)

I haven’t used this yet, however, I can’t see myself ever using it if I’m honest, I know they say you should start the anti-ageing process young but I think 19 is too young to start!

La Société Parisienne de Savons (full size £8.50)
This is yet another thing that is unlikely for me to use because I’m not that fond of soaps because I think they are unhygienic but I’ll try and use it up. The smell is rather unappealing because it smells like the soaps that your grandma used to have that had heavy floral scents.

Mirenesse Glossy Kiss – Perfect Kiss (full size £17.50)
I had a love-hate relationship with this if I’m honest. I loved the colour but I didn’t like the shimmery gold that was in it, however after the colour faded a little the shimmer wasn’t as in your face but I don’t think I would want to spend £17.50 on a product that I’ll end up taking half of it off, so sadly once again this is another thing that I was a little disappointed with.

Weleda Skin Food (full size £8.95)
Now, this I absolutely adored! As you may know, I work in a supermarket so I am on my feet a lot of the time which means my skin suffers from the amount of walking I do throughout the store, I have used about 2 times and it an amazing product! The first time I used it I noticed that it had a slight lemon scent to it which reminded me a lot of when I used to help my nan make lemon drizzle cake when I was younger so that was a happy little memory. Anyway back to the product, it is a thick consistency so a little does go a long way.

Natio Renew Radiance Foam Cleanser (full size £9.20)
Even though this product is for more mature skin is still quite liked the effects. It didn’t make my skin feel dry or tight and my skin did look pretty amazing after using it. So I think it is most definitely worth the money!

Paname Paris Mirror (£7.50)
This is a cute little travel size mirror which is perfect for on the go touch-ups and it is one thing that is always in my bag even if I do change my bags over (which is quite often!)

The editors’  box

Nail Girls Silver Nail Polish (Full size £10.50)
I only had to use one coat of this and they were done! The varnish is the exact same colour on your nails as it is in the bottle and the brush spreads the varnish on the nails really well banishing the streaky looks, unlike the O.P.I varnish!

L’Occitane Angelica Hydration Cream (full size £30)
This is another thing that I have been loving and I have noticed a big difference in my skin since using it! Even though I have been using it every night since I received it there is still quite a lot still in the tub. It is quite a thick cream which is why I only use it at night and days when I know that I’m not going to be going out anywhere that day because it does leave the skin feeling a little tacky but once it sinks in properly (after 4-5 hours!) my skin felt really soft and smooth!

Nick Chavez Beverly Hills Plump n’ Thick Leave In Thickening Mist (Full Size £13.90)
I fell in love with this the moment I used it!! Not only does it thicken your hair but it also acted like a hair treatment because my skin was so soft every time I used this. The thickening effect doesn’t happen straight away but when you brush through your hair or style it then you really notice it! I always wave my hair using my straighteners because I like the volume, so when I carried on with my normal routine after using this my hair was so voluminous and bouncy it was unreal! So this is something that I will definitely be purchasing a full bottle of!

Birchbox Eyelash Curlers (£7.50)
I have mixed emotions about this curler! I love the fact that it fitted my eye a lot better than my Revlon eyelash curler but I didn’t like the look of it, I think it looks kind of cheap because when you hold it, it feels like those metal safety scissors that you used to have in school that wouldn’t even cut tissue paper! However, it does give your lashes a lovely even curl!

Mays Birchbox

O.P.I Nail Laquer (Full size £11.50)
This was horrendous! I was so excited to try this but I was very disappointed. It was rather patchy when I put it on, even with two coats it still looked streaky and because of the colour, it just looked like I had painted my nails with Tippex! I don’t know maybe it was because of the small brush or the formula but it has put me off of using O.P.I again because I don’t really want to waste £11.50 on something that I will regret buying.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for eyes (full-size £57)
I don’t have dry skin around my eyes and I usually just put whatever moisturiser I’m using around my eyes too but since I have tried this it has made me want to buy an eye cream! My eyes look so different, the skin actually looks normal instead of looking like I’m a 100 year old corpse! I would love to repurchase this, however, I can’t afford it. Sadly.

Bioganics Hair Therapy Salon Secret Elixir Hair Perfecting Oil (full size £12.99)
This is AMAZING!!! As I have been trying to stay away from heat and look after my hair the best I can, this has been a life saver!  It is an oily consistency but it doesn’t make your hair greasy! I put this on the mid-lengths and ends of my hair and it has worked absolute wonders! The ends of my hair are no longer frizzy and damaged which also helps the fact that I am trying to grow my hair out! So this is another thing that I will buy a full size of once this runs out.

Kusmi Tea Detox (full size £13.85)
I’m actually having a cup on this right now! It is really nice! It is a Chinese green mixed with lemon grass and the smell of it hits you as soon as you open the tin which is what I love! Now I was a bit of an idiot when I first tried this out, I read what the instructions were on Birchbox’s website but I was stumped when it said “Steep in hot water.” Me being me I just thought they were using a fancy work for pouring but I was wrong! I use half a teaspoon each time and the tin is quite big so I think it’s going to last me for quite a while! Gives me plenty of time to decide if I want to repurchase it but I most likely will!

Wei Chinese Foaming Cleanser (full-size £25)
I think this is one of those products that you use for when you have a ‘homemade spa’ day. It smells absolutely amazing and it cleans your skin really nicely. I used this at night time and in the morning my skin was glowing! My skin tone didn’t look as red, my blemishes had faded quite a lot and it didn’t dry out my skin. I think I will purchase this sometime in the future and just keep it for special occasions and when my skin is freaking out.

So there is my massive Birchbox review and overall I am very happy with what I received and I will most definitely stay subscribed to them.

If you are interested in receiving a box then you can subscribe by clicking here. The boxes are £12.95 (including p&p) which I think is a great deal seeing as you get full-size products occasionally and quite a few extras!

Did you get a Birchbox? What were your thoughts on it?

January Empties | 2013

Used up products

So another month has come and gone and apparently, January was the month that pretty much everything would run out. So let’s get into it!

L’oreal Extra Volume Mousse

This has taken me absolutely FOREVER to use up but it is a great mousse for giving your hair an extra boost of volume! It doesn’t weigh my hair down or dull it. Unfortunately, when I tried to repurchase it, I couldn’t find it anywhere! I asked the staff in both Boots and Superdrug, they said that they weren’t stocking it anymore which is a great shame because was fantastic! However, I have found one just as good and it is the Pantene Pro-V Style – Volume and body Magnifying Mousse.
Dove Go Fresh Pomegranate & Lemon Body Wash
You always know with Dove products that your skin is going to be well looked after and this body wash did the job perfectly! It smells great and leaves your skin soft, so moisturising afterwards was a doddle! When I first used this it reminded me of a fresh fruit smoothie because of the thickness and the smell that hit you as soon as you opened the lid! However, this isn’t my favourite body wash (I also managed to use that up this month too!)
TRESemme Salon Finish Freeze Hold Hairspray
Now you will know that I absolutely love this hairspray! I just wish it wasn’t as harsh on my hair as it is! This is a brilliant hair spray and it does keep your hair in place, but it’s just how solid it goes once it’s dried. It makes my hair feel really rough and dry but I will always come back to it until I find one that isn’t as harsh!
Garnier Pure Active Blackhead Clearing Scrub
I love love LOVE this face scrub! It does exactly what it says on the tin… Well, tube. I stopped using this to try out the Neutrogena visibly clear pink grapefruit facial wash and oil-free moisturiser (click here to read my review) my skin was having a major freak out and when I used this everything calmed down (Updated skincare routine coming soon!) so this is a little lifesaver as it is tested on spot prone skin which is what I have.
Lee Stafford Hair Growth Shampoo
This shampoo is the best one I have ever tried! It is a protein-based shampoo which promotes healthy hair growth and this has worked 100% I have written a full review on the hair growth range here.
Nivea Daily Essentials Express Hydration Primer
I have never been the type to be into moisturising my face but when I noticed it was a primer too I had to try it out because if it kept my makeup looking good for longer and moisturised my skin then it’ll be a win win! I got it for dry/sensitive skin and I think it is brilliant, it kept my skin lovely and soft, my makeup lasted longer and for a small pot, it does last quite a while. So I loved everything about this product and for £4.99 you can’t really go wrong!
Boots Simply Sensitive Anti-Redness Serum
If you have watched my December Favourites video then you will know how I feel about this product! I was getting at my absolute wits end about my red cheeks so I did my research for anti-redness treatments and came across this! It cost me £4.99 and it works an absolute treat! If you are having problems with red cheeks then I urge you to try this!
Original Source Daily Scrub Cranberry and Honey
This is my favourite body wash at the moment! I’m trying out a few of the Original Source body washes and scrubs so once I have gone through a few of them, then I will either do a video or a blog post about them but they are amazing they smell great and they are made with natural products!

Lee Stafford Hair Growth Treatment

Lee Stafford Hair Growth

As you know I’ve been trying out the Lee Stafford range for hair growth. I wouldn’t have tried out these products if it wasn’t for Helen over on Helen Melonlady (Her YouTube) as these products were recommended to her by a friend so I thought I would try it too. I am so glad that I did! I bought them all in Boots whilst the offer 3 for £12 was on, which meant I saved £9.97 so I was very happy! (Let’s hope they have an offer like that again soon!)

 What does it do?
The Lee Stafford hair growth shampoo, conditioner and treatment have a ‘Pro-Growth complex’ which is made of a protein based formula to fertilise your follicles that help to create a healthy environment on your scalp to help it grow faster and stronger. Sounds very technical!

First Impressions!

I adore the shampoo! As I use a lot of product on my hair such as volumising mousse, fibre putty and hairspray I need a shampoo that thoroughly cleans my hair without damaging it. I am already on my 2nd bottle so my only quibble with the bottles is they are a bit small for the price (£6.99) and the clip top lid isn’t practical because when you clip it back down any product that is still in there leaks out and goes everywhere (This I found out whilst travelling and it leaked in my bag)
The conditioner is also good, like the shampoo it leaves my hair lovely and soft.. Although it makes it a little bit harder to style my hair. My hair is pretty annoying as it is a little limp unless I put lots of product in my hair to make it manageable. It’s a very creamy conditioner which in theory mixed with some water it should spread around easily right? WRONG! I usually start at my tips and work my way up so my roots aren’t being drowned in the product, but with this conditioner.. Whole different story! I have to start at the root and work my way down which makes my hair become greasy a lot quicker than usual!
Now the actual treatment itself, I had some problems with… 1. It says to use an “egg size amount” what sort of measuring is that?! I have quite small hands, so I can’t judge sizes very realistically so I ended up grabbing a ‘Sophie palm-sized‘ amount and putting it through my hair. Long story short… It was way too much and my hair the next day was a total grease pit! 2. It also says to use it with every wash until the length of hair improves. Now there are few problems wrong with that… It made my hair stupidly difficult to work with and like I said above it made my hair really greasy, however, other than that it is a good product. Yes, it did make my hair look a little gross, but now that I’m using it every other wash it seems to be fine!

In Summary!

I have been using the whole system since November and I can say it works! It usually takes forever for my fringe to grow out, but in a month and a half it’s already too long to cope with and I haven’t been washing my hair everyday like a lot of people did. I wash my hair every other day, but I am trying to train it to go 3 days without needing to wash it because that’ll cause less damage and less natural oils being washed away that your hair needs to grow and be healthy.
I know that £13.98 is a little steep for just the shampoo and conditioner but I really think it is worth every penny!
Give me your thoughts if you have tried any of the Lee Stafford range!
